One of the things that bothers me about the current Republican Party is their “do as we say, not as we do” philosophy. The latest case in point is the actions as Governor of the VP nominee.
Now, we are all aware of the controversy surrounding Sarah Palin’s daughter’s pregnancy. I admire and appreciate their family’s support for their daughter, and Bristol’s decision to have the child. I agree with all that the personal decision isn’t a matter for public discussion.

However, the Governor’s policies and record are very much a matter for public discussion. In the latest budget for Alaska, Governor Palin used her line item veto to cut funding for transition homes for teenage mothers.

According to the Passage House’s web site, the purpose of these homes is “to provide young mothers a place to live with their babies for up to eighteen months while they gain the necessary skills and resources to change their lives.”

So, what’s the message here? It is best when your parents have the resources to help and support. They are in the position to follow their principles and values. But for others, if you aren’t fortunate to have the resources and support of parents, you are on your own??

Is this “compassionate conservatism”?? Perhaps the governor should have supported resources for all teen mothers in Alaska.
