Fifty years ago today, the New York Times reported:

In a hotel suite almost as hard to find as Vice President Nixon when he wants to hide out, his campaign staff has bloomed into a highly personal organization for the 1960 Presidential campaign.

The staff will shortly number seven and probably expand to nine or ten.  It is the policial organization for Mr. Nixon as distinguished from his Vice-Presidential staff.

Mind you, this report came out on May 30 of the presidential election year.  To put it mildly, things have changed.  At this point in the 2008 campaign, Barack Obama had about 800 people on staff.  Politico described the “lean” McCain operation, with a mere 250.
