The Honorable Barbara Hackman Franklin, member of the Richard Nixon Foundation board of directors, was recently named by TIME Magazine as one of “50 Women Who Made American Political History,” in an article that was released on International Women’s Day 2017.

Secretary Franklin’s public service started in 1971 where she served as the staff assistant to President Nixon. She led the first White House effort to recruit women for high-level government jobs, which resulted in nearly quadrupling the number of women in those positions.

President Nixon later appointed Barbara Franklin to be an original Commissioner of the newly-formed U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. She later served as the 29th U.S. Secretary of Commerce for President George H. W. Bush where she increased American exports and pushed market-opening initiatives to normalize commercial relations in China, Russia, Japan and Mexico.

She is now the President and Chief Executive Officer of Barbara Franklin Enterprises, a private international consulting firm.
