Policy with Purpose: President Nixon’s Drug Strategy in a 21st Century Context, Facts From the Front Lines and Treatment Triumphs

September 18, 2025 | 10:30 am - 1:30 pm PDT

In 2023, the Richard Nixon Foundation hosted a conference to mark the 50th anniversary of the DEA titledĀ A Nation of Narcotics: Drug Control Policies from Nixon’s DEA to the Fentanyl Crisis.

The conference took an in-depth look at President Nixon’s often misunderstood drug control policies, the creation of the Drug Enforcement Agency and how it evolved into the organization it is today, and how treatment specialists and law enforcement began addressing the country’s crisis of addiction.Ā High-profile participants included members of President Nixon’s Administration responsible for implementing his drug policies, law enforcement officials, and the country’s leading addiction specialists and doctors.

This year’s event will build on the success of the 2023 conference by applying the roadmap established by President Nixon’s effective drug policy in the context of the 21st century.
