In partnership with the @milkeninstitute, the Richard Nixon Foundation was honored to present the Dr. Andrew von Eschenbach Award to Michael Milken and the Legacy of Hope Award to Marlene Malek—recognizing extraordinary leadership in the fight against cancer.
Both awards were presented by Nixon Foundation board member Melanie Eisenhower—great-granddaughter of President Dwight D. Eisenhower and granddaughter of President Richard Nixon—who delivered remarks and underscored a key point: the modern national campaign against cancer began with President Nixon’s signing of the National Cancer Act of 1971.
The awards were presented during this year`s annual cancer convening—Cancer 2035: A Roadmap for the Future, where leaders across science, medicine, policy, technology, finance, and philanthropy gathered to chart the next era of cancer prevention, research, and care—all while marking the 55th anniversary of the National Cancer Act and asking how today’s tools can accelerate the next wave of breakthroughs.
Featured speakers included @dr_oz, @repdianadegette, @sencapito, Dr. Anthony Letai, Dr. James Allison, Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong, @drwilliamli and three former NIH directors—Dr. Elias Zerhouni, Dr. Francis Collins, and Dr. Monica Bertagnolli—along with many other leaders advancing this mission.
Defeat is a teacher.
Surrender is a choice.

Peace and prosperity never last forever, and when the inevitable crisis comes, the President must have the will, the stature, the vision, and the power to lead the country through it. But if he has declined to lead when times are good, the nation may not turn to him when times turn bad. At such moments, the idea of congressional leadership is little more than a bad joke. As de Gaulle once observed, “Members of Parliament can paralyze action. They cannot initiate it."

Question asked of President Nixon during his press conference on May 8, 1970, 4 days following the shootings at Kent State:
"Mr. President, in the light of the Kent State University incident, could you tell us what, in your judgment, is the proper action and conduct for a police force or a National Guard force when ordered to clear the campus area and faced with a crowd throwing rocks?"

“If the U.S. doesn’t stand up for its friends, we`re not going to have friends.”
Nixon said this in 1980—after the U.S. turned its back on the Shah of Iran and paid the price.
Was he right?
