Former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo returned a capacity crowd at the Nixon Library this week to discuss his New York Times bestselling memoir, Never Give an Inch: Fighting for the America I Love. Nationally-syndicated radio host and Nixon Foundation board member Hugh Hewitt moderated the conversation as part of the Nixon Foundation’s distinguished speaker series.

As the only four-year national security member of President Trump’s Cabinet, Secretary Pompeo shared his unique experience heading both the CIA and State Department from the inner workings of big agencies to the practicalities of dealing with foreign leaders. When asked how to explain to the American people how to begin the process of decoupling with China, Secretary Pompeo began with an overarching description of leadership style: “Good leaders making the case to the American people. That’s how all good policy begins. Presidents with all candor speaking to you, explaining why this matters.”

Secretary Pompeo currently serves as co-chair of the Nixon Seminar on Conservative Realism and National Security and is a recipient of the Nixon Foundation’s Architect of Peace Award.
