June 28, 1970: On June 28, 1970, First Lady Pat Nixon flew to Peru where she aided those who had been affected by the Great Peruvian Earthquake of May 31, 1970. As part of “volunteer American relief drive,” Mrs. Nixon flew on Air Force One carrying ten tons of donated food, clothing, and medical supplies. Mrs. Nixon was awarded Peru’s highest decoration–The Grand Cross of the Order of the Sun–for her humanitarian mission.
