Barack Obama is the first non-Southern Democrat to win a majority of the popular vote since 1944. (In 1960, JFK got less than 50 percent in his race against the Old Man.)
In fact, he is only the second non-Southern Democrat since 1828 to get more than 51 percent. The other was FDR.
