This morning renowned primatologist and conservationist Jane Goodall served as Grand Marshal of the Rose Parade, the leader of a national American tradition to ring in the New Year. She follows a long line of distinguished individuals to serve as Grand Marshal throughout the 124 Rose Parades, including Richard Nixon, who had the distinct honor of serving as Grand Marshal twice.

In 1973, the University of Southern California was in the Rose Bowl and they invited their most famous alumna, the First Lady, to participate (long after John Wayne had already been chosen as Grand Marshal). Mrs. Nixon served as the guest of honor in the parade:
